The Junior Section has a dedicated tee-time every Saturday morning when our PGA Professionals and Junior Golf Organisers provide coaching sessions. Our aim, first and foremost, is to ensure that our youngsters enjoy themselves and learn new skills through focused tuition from our Professional staff. Regular taster sessions are organised which centre on the basic elements of golf. Graded activities range from short game practise sessions, chipping, putting and bunker technique to 18-hole competitions for the more accomplished, supervised by PGA Level 1 Coaches and volunteers. There is always a buzz around the club each Saturday morning commencing at 8.15am with eager and expectant youngsters and parents, enthusiastic to begin the morning tasks, at times in conditions which would be daunting for seasoned professionals.
The Club has now obtained the "Golf Mark Higher Achiever Award" and was awarded the distinction of being Cornwall's "Golf Mark Club of the Year 2011". This is a reflection of the commitment of the Club to a National scheme, that identifies and recognises junior- and beginner-friendly clubs. The assessment concentrated on 3 key elements:- Coaching and Playing; the Club environment; and Child Protection and Duty of Care
An indication of the Club's commitment to Junior Golf is the selection of Harry Hall for the full Cornwall County side and the England Golf Under-16 team. By 14 years old Harry achieved a scratch handicap and won the 2012 Cornwall Junior Championship at his home course, a title that he successfully defended in 2013 at St Austell GC. He has also won the prestigious Learmonth Bowl, West Cornwall's 36-hole Open Medal that attracts entries from all over the country. As for competing internationally, he was part of the England Golf u-16 team that won all three of its matches in the 2013 Autumn Home Internationals (report here) . And finally, we are one of the few Clubs in the County, if not Country, with a thriving girl membership. Junior girls number almost 20 at present, ranging in ages from 7 to 17 and all levels of handicap. Much of our success in this area is due to our having had female Professionals at the Club.
We extend a warm welcome to you all. Golf really is a fantastic sport in which social skills and sporting excellence develop side-by-side. Please download the Junior Handbook for further information and do read our regular newsletters which will give you a flavour of our commitment to young golfers here at West Cornwall.
